Storytelling for Social Change

Social change is inspired by effective storytelling. Our allies in the Climate Justice Alliance (CJA), a group of organizers that includes our Strategic Partners with the Movement Generation Justice & Ecology Project, understand that captivating stories can create awareness and call an audience to action around an issue. For this reason, CJA’s Summer of Our Power campaign is launching a storytelling project to make visible the important climate justice work being done in frontline communities across the U.S., where people are finding solutions that are healthy and equitable for both people and the planet.

To honor the power of stories to influence thought, OAEC is hosting our 2nd Annual Storytelling Chautauqua on Friday, July 17th (7:30-9:30pm)

This one-night-only variety show will feature stories by renowned performers Joyce Lee, Dhaya Lakshminarayanan, and Baruch Porras-Hernandez, as well as:

  • Jay Golden, Storytelling Coach and Founder of Wakingstar Storyworks, who will break down the power of stories to create meaning in one’s life, unify a community and change the world.
  • Christine Cordero, Program Director at the Center for Story-Based Strategy, who poetically recounts the struggles and joys of growing up in the marginalized Asian Pacific American community.
  • Mike Johnson, who will describe his journey from being homeless and addicted to drugs to becoming CEO of Petaluma’s Committee on the Shelterless.
  • Ane Carla Rovetta, who combines her knowledge of plants and animals with visual artistry to connect audiences more deeply to nature.

You will also enjoy storytelling songs by the talented Alison Harris and OAEC’s own Janel Healy, as well as MC narration by Chautauqua Series founder James Pelican.
