Now Hiring Experienced Cooks

The Occidental Arts & Ecology Center is seeking great cooks with experience or culinary training as we begin to reopen in 2022. We operate a vegetarian kitchen (with occasional meat served by request) and the chefs/cooks provide garden-based menus & leadership to the prep cooks in serving buffet-style meals to our guests, staff and residential community. At this time, we are maintaining the highest level of Covid protocols.

Job Duties and Requirements:

  • Duties of the job include menu writing (in collaboration with the Kitchen Manager), prep list & pacing of shifts to insure quality execution and presentation of the menus, and some closing routine tasks.
  • Availability early mornings, evenings and weekends.  Minimum commitment of signing up for 6 shifts per month.
  • Reliability, prompt arrival to work, and time management at task are a must.
  • Ability to work safely and efficiently, and remain calm and focused in a fast-paced environment. Willingness and ability to follow instructions and work as a team.
  • Regular access and responsiveness via email and punctuality in submitting schedule confirmations and menus.
  • Skill and familiarity with basic cooking and baking techniques, tools, and terms.
  • Attentiveness to detail, cleanliness, and hygiene are key.
  • Ability to comfortably and safely lift 40 pounds.
  • Strong social skills including interacting with residents, guests, and other kitchen staff in a professional, cooperative, friendly, and helpful manner.
  • At this time, all OAEC staff, including prep cooks and cleaners, are required to be vaccinated against Covid 19.

Scheduling Your Work: These positions are at-will and are booked per event, retreat or course, so weekly hours will vary. Preference will be given to applicants who are willing to do evening and weekend shifts.

Compensation: Starting pay for Cooks is $23.00/hour.
