This Facilities Internship is a hybrid position of our traditional 24 hr/week work with the Facilities crew PLUS a paid position as a part-time Retreat Host. The Retreat Host will average about 15 hr/week, depending on frequency of retreats.Ā
Facilities Internship
The Facilities Internship tackles the usual array of facilities related work that maintains and improves the infrastructure at OAEC. Facilities interns have the opportunity to learn a great dealĀ in some or most of the following areas, depending on the work that needs to be done: carpentry, plumbing, electrical, woodworking, forest management and more. While much of what we do is functional in its approach, we do not pass up an opportunity to employ an artistic sensibility in our work.
Internship Details
The facilities intern works in areas such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, woodworking and forest management. This position focuses on maintaining and improving the infrastructure at OAEC. Tasks vary from simple, quick repairs to multi-week construction projects. While much of what we do is functional in its approach, we do not pass up an opportunity to employ an artistic sensibility in our work.
- Internships typically begin in late January and end in mid-December
- The work week is 24 hours, typically Tuesday-Thursday, upon agreement with the Facilities Manager. Ample vacation, holiday, and sick time is provided.
- In exchange for their work, all interns are given a private, cozy place to live and community meals (access to a fully-stocked kitchen, pantry, and on-site garden veggies and orchard). Interns also receive free participation in the OAEC Permaculture Design Course, as well as a $300 monthly stipend.
- Interns work closely with OAEC Facilities Manager James Pelican and Assistant Facilities Manager Chris Santana.
- Interns participate in all aspects of life of the residential community, including meal sharing and contributing to the regular cooking and chore rotations.
Retreat Host

Retreat Host Details
- The Retreat Host is an hourly position, $25/hour.
- Frequency of retreats fluctuates widely throughout the year. Some weeks when we do not have retreats scheduled, there are no hosting responsibilities, but when we have retreats scheduled, the retreat host will be very busy. The average over the year is approximately 15 hours per week.
- Shifts are after 5pm on weekdays, and both days and nights on weekends.
Job Description
- Serve as host and point person for groups staying at OAEC outside of business hours.
- Complete standard hosting tasks including, but not limited to, greeting guests, orienting groups to the guest housing and the land, tidying spaces used by rental groups, making coffee, restocking the kitchenette, setting up the fire circle etc.
- Engage with the groups in a professional, service-oriented manner, being mindful and respectful of the needs of the group and the work they are doing
- Attend to rental groupās emergent needs and any changes in plans
- Answer questions about OAEC policy that a group may ask
- Deal with emergencies/safety issues
Qualifications
For this hybrid position, we are searching for a responsible candidate, who with some training and a great attitude, can independently handle a wide range of problem solving for both the facilities and our guests.
- Skills in any and all areas of the building trades are desirable but not necessary.
- Experience in hospitality or customer service is a plus, but proven reliability, professionalism and courtesy are paramount.
- Excitement in working with the diverse groups of activists working for racial, social and environmental justice who come from all over the country and world to OAEC.
- Ability to work well alone or as part of a team.
- Ability to be flexible with hours and work assignments.
- A valid driverās license & clean driving record.
