Perennial Food Crops / Permaculture Plants

Aji Amarillo Pepper:
Capsicum baccatum.  Native to Peru. Very hot, but flavorful.  Slender yellowish-orange fruits up to 4 inches long, tapered on both ends. Plants bushy, up to 3 ½ feet tall.  Very productive

Artichoke:
Cynara scolymus.  Native to the Mediterranean. Flowers delicious, leaves used medicinally.  3-5 ft tall, 3 ft wide.  Full sun, grows well in all soils with compost, drought tolerant once established

Asparagus:
Asparagus officinalis. Native to Europe, North Afria, Western Asia. Spring spears are tasty raw or cooked, high in antioxidants. 40-60 in. tall, spreading underground. Full sun, deep, well-drained soil, regular water. Wait at least one year before harvesting spears.

Cardoon:
Cynara cardunculus. Native to Mediterranean. Stems delicious cooked, artichoke flavor. 3-5 ft tall, 3 ft wide. Full sun, rich soil, drought tolerant once established.

French Sorrel
:
Rumex scutatus. Native to South-Central Europe and Southwest Asia. Delicious acidic lemon flavored leaves. Up to 1 ft tall, 3 ft wide. Full sun to part shade, moist well-drained soil.

Jerusalem Artichoke/Sunchoke:
Helianthus tuberosus. Native to Eastern North America. Tasty tubers harvested in fall, keep well in refrigerator, contain inulin which doesnot raise blood sugar like starch does. 4 ft tall, yellow daisy flower. Full sun, well-drained fertile sandy soil makes tubers easier to dig.

Job’s Tears:
Coix lacryma-jobi. Native to East Asia and Peninsular Malaysia. Edible seeds, valued in Chinese medicine, mature seeds used as beads. 3-6 ft tall, 2-3 ft wide. Perennial in frost-free location, can be grown in large planter pot, full sun/part shade, regular water.

Malabar Spinach:
Basella rubra. Native to Africa and Southwest India. Edible stems and leaves. 8-10 ft tall vine. Full sun, fertile well-drained soil, best grown on trellis.

Manzano Peppers, Red and Yellow:
Capsicum pubescens. Native to Peru and Bolivia. Very hot, very flavorful. 4-5 ft tall. Full sun, grows in all soils with compost, drought tolerant once established.

Passion Fruit Vine:
Passiflora incarnata. Native to Eastern U.S. Edible fruit, leaves used medicinally. Climbing or sprawling vine. Full sun/part shade, any well-drained soil.

Red Veined Dock:
Rumex sanguineus. Native to Europe, North Africa, Southwest Asia. Young leaves tasty raw, older leaves good cooked. 2-3 ft. tall, 1 ft wide. Full sun/part shade, almost any soil, regular water.

Rhubarb:
Rheum rhabarbarum. Native to Mongolia. Stalks tart and tasty when cooked, valued in Chinese medicine. 3 ft tall and wide. Full sun, any soil with compost, regular water.

Walking Stick Cabbage:
Brassica oleracea. Native to Europe. Delectable, nutritious leaves. 6-10ft tall, 3ft wide. Full sun/part shade, any soil with compost, drought tolerant once established.

Mashua:
Tropaeolum tuberosum. Native to the Andes. Abundant edible tubers with potato-like flavor. Sprawling vine-like plant. Full sun, productive even in poor soils, regular water.

Oca:
Oxalis tuberosa. Native to the Andes. Abundant edible tubers with sweet, slightly acidic flavor. 1 ft tall, 2 ft wide. Full sun, productive even in poor soils, regular water.

Pepino:
Solanum muricatum. Native to the Andes. Lightly sweet Honeydew-like fruit. 1 ft tall, 2 ft wide. Full sun, any soil with compost, drought tolerant once established.

Pyrethrum:
Tanacetum coccineum. Native to the Caucasus region. Used as a natural insecticide. 2 ft tall, 1 ft wide. Full sun, fertile, well-drained soil, drought tolerant.

Tamarillo:

Sweet Mace:

Agrimonia eupatoria. Native to Europe. Used to ward off witchcraft in ancient times, currently used to treat kidneys, liver, and bladder.

Ashwagandha:
