Facilities Internship (10 month position)
Thank you for your interest in the 2008 Facilities Internship- the new intern has been hired for 2008.
February 1, 2009 to November 30, 2009
If fixing pipes, wiring a circuit, making a screen door, and spraying compost tea sounds like a good work day to you, then you should apply for the Facilities Internship. This residential position focuses on maintaining and improving the infrastructure at OAEC. Tasks vary from the simple and quick to multi-week construction projects. While much of what we do is functional in its approach, we do not pass up an opportunity to employ an artistic sensibility in our work.

James Pelican and Stephanie Smith (2005-2006 Intern) show the proper use of tools in the OAEC woodshop.
The facilities intern has the opportunity to learn a lot in some or most of the following areas, depending on the work that needs to be done: carpentry, plumbing, electrical, woodworking, forest management, etc. The intern works closely with the Facilities Manager, James Pelican, and his trusty assistant, Jim Coleman. The intern also helps out with the theater program as James and Jim are the managers of the outdoor theatre and its program.
So what are we looking for in an intern? First on the list is that whomever we hire must be easy to get along with. If you think you can fulfill that one, read on:
- Ease of understanding and applying task instructions
- Ability to work equally as well alone or as part of a team
- Skills in any and all areas of the "trades" are desirable but not necessary
- Ability to be flexible with hours and work assignments
- A valid driver's license & clean driving record
- Appreciation for loud rock and roll is desirable but not necessary
The intern is asked to work 25 hrs/week with the weekly schedule to be agreed upon between the facilities director and the intern. In return, the intern is given a cozy place to live, a subsidy on our food share program (balance to be paid each month is $87.50), use of all the facilities on-site, and free participation in OAEC classes/workshops, on a standby basis. The intern is asked to take part in the community cooking and chore rotations. Each community member cooks dinner once every two weeks, in contribution to our community dinner schedule.
